With so many hidden gems to discover and explore along the way, not having a strict timeline is the perfect way to experience the best of our country. That’s why motorhoming and caravanning is a great way to do it. Our freedom camping laws mean that if your motorhome or caravan is certified self-contained you can park up almost anywhere, giving you access to some of the best camping spots the country has to offer and allowing you the time to really make the most of your Great Kiwi Road Trip.

Driving in New Zealand

To make sure you have a safe and enjoyable journey there are a few things that you may not be used to when driving in New Zealand.

For example:

  • we drive on the left side of the road

  • it’s easy to underestimate travelling times

  • our roads are narrower, more winding and sometimes steeper than you might expect

  • our roads are mostly two-way, with one lane in each direction - we have few motorways
